Rhodes Hippotherapy Center “Therapevin” was created in April 2017 and is based in Rodos Riding Club ”Kadmos”.
The goal of the organization is to provide equine assisted treatments in which the horse is not used as an object. The equine assisted treatments include:
- Hippotherapy and therapeutic riding, practiced by physicians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists.
- Equine assisted learning /exercises, practiced by psychologists, educators and special education teachers
Equine assisted psychotherapy practiced by mental health professionals trained for this purpose.
Therapeutic Riding is suitable for people of almost all ages who experience movement, sensory and mental difficulties, as well as people with psychological or psychiatric problems and disabilities.
It is an entirely separate therapeutic intervention, which does not aspire to replace the classical special education, physiotherapy, occupational therapy ,psychotherapy, or speech therapy. Instead it is designed to effectively complement them.
In Therapeutic Horse Riding, horses are used as a special means for emotional development and learning. The process is not limited only to riding, but it also uses horse care acts (such as brushing, grooming etc) as well as the relationship that grows through these acts, as a way to create bonds, trust, respect and accountability.
As patients learn to handle and deal with a horse and manage its instincts, they end up internalizing the process subconsciously and learn to manage and channel their own instincts.
All the above are just a few of the many messages and lessons that one can receive through the engagement with horses and through one’s integration into the small society of the horse.
